True Crime Diary

Essay film

HD Video / Still images, 04:00 min, 2024

One day, my neighbors were out for a walk when they met a girl riding a bicycle. She asked for directions, and they kindly showed her the way. Later, she was found murdered in a deserted area—just a week before summer vacation was meant to begin.

I return to the place where I grew up and retrace the route the girl may have taken over twenty years ago. In the video parallel images are showing the same locations at different moments in time, without being synchronized.

The accompanying essay explores "True crime" as a metaphor for security and threat, control and the unknown. It also raises questions about place—what happens when spaces once considered safe are transformed into crime scenes?
